Why can’t I log into Facebook with my Instagram account?
There’s a lot of speculation about why Facebook doesn’t let you log into it using an Instagram account, but here’s what I think.
Facebook bought Instagram for 1 Billion USD in 2012, and ever since then both the applications have gotten more linked by the day.
Since then we have seen Facebook’s shadow grow on Instagram ever so slowly. It has gotten to a point where both Instagram and WhatsApp have the words, “from FACEBOOK” written in their mobile apps in multiple places!
In this day and age, Facebook has a lot more authority on the internet. Instagram aside, you can log into so many other websites and apps just by using a Facebook account. So, it would be weird if you could log into Facebook with an Instagram account.
It would make Facebook lose some of its authority. And in turn, it would give Instagram a lot more authority. Currently, you can’t use any third-party application to log into Facebook. Facebook doesn’t even have a ‘Sign in with Google’ option.
But then you could argue, “well, Facebook owns Instagram, so what’s the big deal? Just let me log in to Facebook with my Instagram!”
Technically speaking, Facebook could let you log into it with an Instagram account. But Facebook is rather stubborn when it comes to something like this. Facebook is their brand. It’s the parent to all these other companies:
- Oculus VR
Having a daughter company like Instagram having authority over Facebook could potentially hurt their brand.
Is there anything I can do with my Instagram account on Facebook?
Even though Facebook doesn’t let you log into it using an Instagram account, you can actually link both accounts, and post from Instagram to Facebook and vise versa.
This can be extremely useful if you run a business as you wouldn’t have to constantly post on both social media platforms, and you could just post on one and have it automatically show up at the other.
This feature actually works better if you post from Instagram. If you post from Instagram you get the option to post to either your Facebook profile or your Facebook Page.
But to do so you need to link your Instagram account to your Facebook account. Linking your Instagram to your Facebook lets you do a few things:
- Cross-post from Instagram to Facebook & Vise Versa
- Log into Instagram with Facebook
- Recover your Instagram with your Facebook profile (reset the password)
If you want to link your Instagram to your Facebook profile, you can follow these steps on your mobile phone:
- Open Instagram and log-in if you aren’t logged-in.
- Go to your Profile page and tap on the hamburger menu at the top right.
- Then tap on Settings at the bottom right.
- Tap on Account.
- Then tap on Linked Accounts.
- Now, Tap on Facebook.
- In Facebook Options, you can either share to your Facebook Profile or your Facebook Page.
- Under Preferences, be sure to turn on “Share your Story to Facebook” and “Share your Posts to Facebook”.
Will Facebook Ever Let you Log into Facebook with Instagram?
Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that this happens. Doing so would undermine Facebook’s authority as it would give too much importance to Instagram.
We can only hope that Facebook integrates Instagram login into its service, but I wouldn’t bet on this feature coming any time soon.
